Cultivating Discernment: A Mindful Journey to What Truly Nourishes Us
At a time where we often find ourselves bombarded with well-intentioned advice and societal expectations about what is deemed “healthy” and “right for us”, it's easy to get caught up in the currents of popular opinions, or just anyone else’s opinions; surrendering our autonomy and individual experience to the collective voice.
However, as a mindfulness teacher, I invite you to walk the path of self-discovery and take the time to understand what is right for your unique self; where discernment becomes your guiding light. This can be in any area of life- physical health, mental health, relationships, work, values…..
Let’s explore the importance of discerning what is genuinely healthy or unhealthy for us, rather than blindly accepting the endless stream of information coming at us.
First let’s explore the difference between knowledge and wisdom.
Knowledge is the acquisition of information and skills, while wisdom is the ability to apply that knowledge in a thoughtful and discerning manner, often with a focus on making choices that are beneficial not only in the short term but also in the long run, both for oneself and for others. Wisdom incorporates a sense of judgment, discernment, and a broader understanding of the complexities of life and human interactions. This requires mindfulness.
So how can you start to cultivate more discernment?
1. Embrace Mindful Awareness:
In our fast-paced world, we tend to consume information and make choices on autopilot. Mindfulness calls us to pause, to be fully present in the moment, and to observe our thoughts and sensations without judgment. When we approach the idea of health and wellness with mindful awareness, we become attuned to our unique inner wisdom, our body's signals, and our emotional responses to different choices.
2. Challenge Assumptions:
Society often dictates what is "healthy" or "ideal," imposing rigid standards that may not align with our individual needs and values. To truly discern what is healthy for us, we must courageously challenge these assumptions. Ask yourself: Does this resonate with my authentic self? Is this aligned with my goals and values? Am I choosing this path out of fear or genuine desire?
3. Listen to Your Body:
Our bodies are remarkable vessels of wisdom. They communicate with us through sensations, emotions, and intuitions. Learning to listen to these cues is an essential aspect of discernment. Pay attention to how different foods, activities, and environments make you feel. Your body is an ever-evolving guide, and it knows what nourishes and depletes you. We just need to pause long enough to listen.
4. Engage in Self-Reflection:
To discern what is healthy for us, we must engage in self-reflection. Take time to explore your beliefs, habits, and past experiences. Reflect on what has truly brought you vitality, joy, and contentment. What has drained your energy and caused distress? This introspective journey can illuminate the path to your unique version of health.
5. Seek Knowledge with Discernment:
In our information age, we are inundated with health advice from myriad sources. While knowledge is a valuable resource, discernment is your compass. Approach information with an open yet critical mind. Consider the source's credibility, intentions, and whether the advice aligns with your personal wisdom and experiences. This is especially true in working with doctors, coaches, trainers and healers. While they are all trying their best to give you information to better your health, part of the healing and growth process comes from your participation and awareness in the process of what is working for you, and what is not. Work together with your support system to learn how to discern what is healing and what is harmful.
6. Cultivate Patience and Compassion:
Discernment is not an instant revelation but a gradual unfolding. It’s a skill! Be patient with yourself as you navigate this path. Leas with self-compassion as you learn and grow from both successes and setbacks. Remember that your journey is unique, and comparison to others serves no purpose.
7. Trust Your Inner Compass:
As you embark on this journey of discernment, trust in your inner compass. Building trust in yourself is also a skill. Your intuition is a powerful guide, leading you toward choices that resonate with your authentic self.
When you embrace discernment, you take ownership of your health and well-being and the process itself becomes healing and transformative. It calls for mindfulness, self-reflection, and a deep trust in our inner wisdom. By tuning in to our unique needs and values, we break free from the weight of external expectations and embrace a life that truly nourishes our body, mind, and soul. May your journey to wholeness be one of self-discovery, empowerment, and profound well-being.
